Per il brano musicale del giorno mi fermo in Inghilterra e vi propongo i The Verve (originariamente soltanto Verve), che sono stati un gruppo musicale alternative rock britannico.

La loro hit più famosa è sicuramente “Bitter Sweet Symphony” (1995), dal ritmo regolare e incalzante, aiutata a diventare popolare sicuramente dal video, nato da un’idea molto semplice (una persona che cammina sul marciapiede di una strada), ma con la caratteristica particolare dell’arroganza e maleducazione del soggetto in primo piano (Richard Ashcroft, frontman del gruppo) che va dritto e contro le persone sbattendosene di tutto e di tutti.

Nonostante questo, la canzone non raggiunse mai il primo posto nelle classifiche britanniche (arrivò al secondo, come anche in Italia), al contrario del successivo singolo “The Drugs Don’t Work”.

In un’intervista del 2016 per Noisey, a proposito del brano Richard Ashcroft ha dichiarato:

«Il primo verso di Bitter Sweet Symphony fa: “Sei schiavo dei soldi e poi muori”. Nessuno avrebbe detto che sarebbe diventata una canzone popolare. Se avessi soltanto guardato il testo di Bitter Sweet Symphony avresti detto: “Wow, questo è il mucchio di merda più deprimente che abbia mai letto in vita mia. Non sarà mai una hit”»

Infatti… 🙂

Altra curiosità: Keith Richards e Mick Jagger sono stati aggiunti come compositori del brano a causa di una controversia legale nella quale i Rolling Stones accusavano i The Verve di avere utilizzato senza permesso il riff di archi presenti nella loro canzone “The Last Time” (1965).
